Liner Notes on "Seven Steps to Heaven":

The art of jazz guitar is alive and well in Europe thanks to four excellent musicians. “Seven Steps to Heaven” is a musical tour of classic and modern standards. The recording has a spontaneous live feel as the players, led by guitarist Giuseppe Continenza, explore each of these timeless tunes. Fellow guitarist Vic Juris (Dave Liebman’s guitarist from United States) brings his talents as a fine improviser and accompanist to the session. The two guitarists compliment each other well trading melodic and fiery solos as well as impressive chordal playing. And when two guitar players with these kinds of chops go at it, you a great supporting cast and it’s here too. Dominique Di Piazza (ex John McLaughlin’s bassist) and drummer Pietro Iodice keep swinging and grooving and grooving. And Di Piazza steps the spotlight with a few impressive solos of his own.

In my many years teaching at Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, I had the pleasure of working with student guitarists from around the world. Giuseppe Continenza always has stood out in my memory as one of my favourite. This warm and friendly guitar player from Italy was full enthusiasm and spent countless hours in my office playing with me. It was clear to me at the time that Giuseppe was well on his way to becoming a fine jazz guitar player. I’ve followed his career in Italy over the past ten years. His recent recordings really impressed me with how much he has become a top-notch player. And Giuseppe’s warmth and enthusiasm and a decade of practicing, really shines through in “Seven Steps”. I feel like a proud parent.

L’arte della chitarra jazz è viva e vegeta in Europa grazie a quattro eccellenti musicisti. “Seven Steps to Heaven” è un viaggio musicale all’interno di standards moderni e classici. La registrazione ha un atmosfera spontanea e dal vivo mentre i musicisti, guidati dal chitarrista Giuseppe Continenza, esplorano ciascuna di queste canzoni sempreverdi. L’amico chitarrista Vic Juris (Chitarrista di Dave Liebman e statunitense) apporta il suo talento sia come chitarra solista sia come chitarra ritmica, in maniera sempre eccellente. I due chitarristi si completano a vicenda scambiandosi assolo melodici e nel tempo stesso infuocati così come un notevole accompagnamento ad accordi. Dominique Di Piazza (Ex bassista di John McLaughlin) al basso e Pietro Iodice alla batteria danno un ottimo contributo ritmico e Di Piazza suona tra l’altro assoli raffinati e pieni di energia.

Nei miei molti anni di insegnamento al Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, ho avuto il piacere di lavorare con studenti chitarristi provenienti da tutto il mondo. Giuseppe Continenza si è sempre distinto nei miei ricordi come uno dei miei preferiti. Questo caloroso ed amichevole chitarrista italiano è stato pieno di entusiasmo ed ha trascorso innumerevoli ore nel mio ufficio suonando con me. Mi è stato chiaro sin da allora che Giuseppe era ben avviato sulla strada giusta per diventare un eccellente chitarrista jazz.
Ho seguito la sua carriera in Italia negli ultimi dieci anni. Le sue recenti registrazioni mi hanno veramente fatto capire che è diventato un chitarrista di straordinarie qualità. Ed il suo calore ed entusiasmo, uniti ad un decennio di attività professionale, sono evidenti in “Seven Steps”.
Mi sento un genitore orgoglioso.
